The Ministry of Education has set out a curriculum for Early Childhood Education. This curriculum is called Te Whaariki, meaning the Interwoven Mat. The daily programme is based around an area of interest that has been initiated by the children during their play. The topic of interest, or storyline, will run as long as the children have an interest. The activities relating to the focus are listed on the planning sheet and are selected to ensure that the Centre provides a programme that meets the strands and goals set out in Te Whaariki. Parents/caregivers are welcome to contribute any resources or knowledge they may have on a particular focus.
The Preschool offers an Extension Programme for older children to help develop essential skills and to encourage links with school. This is held with a small group of older children, for up to 30 minutes and covers such topics as numeracy and literacy.
Teach a child how he should live and he will remember it all his life.
